Greetings to our innumerable hosts of loyal and adoring fans!
It's that time of year again... The time of year when we gather with all the people who love us the most, so that we can ignore them and busy ourselves in the brain-melting comfort of the ubiquitous rectangular devices that we all carry around in our pockets for no particular reason...
But what if there's a better way? Something better to do with that time, and with those gatherings...
We've got good news! There is! There is the ancient and illustrious tradition of the family game night! There is the dice-rolling, card-shuffling, wit-testing, camaraderie-forming excitment that only comes from indulging in a well-crafted board game! Let's go over some of the benefits of playing board games...
Benefit 1: It's good for your brain
Board games are great for childhood development and for keeping oursleves in good mental shape as we age! By engaging our brains and focing us to strategize, make decisions, and solve problems in a fun way; board games help us stretch those under-used "muscles" of the mind. We could all benefit from a bit more patience, concentration, and creative thinking skills.
Benefit 2: It's REALLY good for your brain
There is evidence that board games help us maintain better cognitive function in our old age and even decrease the risk of dementia!
Benefit 3: It gives us a break from the screens
Let's face it... We all spend too much time staring at screens. Whether we're working on a computer, killing time on our phones, or watching TV; we seem to spend and overwhelming amount of our lives staring at screens these days. Research has shown all sorts of negative consequences ranging from trouble sleeping to declining social skills, and even depression. Board games offer us an alternative. A way to unplug for a little while and enjoy something tangible, social, and healthy.
Benefit 4: It brings people together
Board games are a great way to bring people together and improve our social skills. The offer an easy, low-stress, way to connect with the people around us. By focusing a group of people on a single activity, they create bridges across generations and across the wildly varying interests and backgrounds of that group. Social skills are a "use-it-or-lost-it" sorta thing. The more we engage with people, the better we get at engaging with people and the easier it gets to carry conversations and enjoy visiting.
This Christmas season, we encourage you all to engage in a bit of friendly competition with your loved ones.
Merry Christmas!
